NSA Mid-South helps local Communities through Feds Feed Families

Millington, TN – Personnel from the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South Chapel and Commissary continued providing support to the Feds Feed Families and the greater Mid-South, a testament to the installation's commitment to serving the local community and supporting those in need across the region.

The Feds Feed Families is an annual government-wide campaign that encourages employees from all federal departments and agencies to donate in-kind contributions—food, services, and time—to food banks and pantries.

"It's a great program. All the donations that we receive stay within our community," said Religious Program Specialist Second Class (RP2) Zorriya Brown.

Brown has continued to encourage the members of the federal workforce and service members stationed and living around the installation to participate in the program. According to local census data, there are over 6 thousand Service Members and Federal Government Workers across NSA Mid-South with over 45 thousand retired personnel and family members across the region.

"This is your own community. Let's help each other. Because today it could be you, tomorrow it’s that person, but the next day it could be me. So, it's always good to provide. And if it's within our power, let's do it," added RP2 Brown.

Patrons can donate directly at the commissary by personally selecting non-perishable food items and dropping them off in one of the collection bins across the installation, or by purchasing a prepackaged bag at the commissary and dropping it in the collection box by checkout. Once donations are received, the Mid-South Religious Service Office team picks up the food and distributes it to local food banks in our area. The program helps veterans, retirees, service members, and civilians in need.

“It’s hard not getting emotional about giving,” said Brown, “On one hand you see someone who maybe down on their luck and in need of a helping hand, but on the other side it’s so good for the soul to be able to be that helping hand that is outstretched.”

Through the Feds Feed Families program (1 Jun - 30 Sept), the service members and federal employees across NSA Mid-South have collected and donated over four thousand pounds of food to local communities. Additionally, since Jan 1 the NSA Mid-South Community has collected over 9 thousand pounds of food that has been distributed to local food backs in the greater Millington, TN region.
